Sea Day Cloudy Sky Moderate Swell Temp 16c
From the navigator.
Throughout the day, Sun Princess will maintain on a north-easterly
heading. One of the most important instruments we have on the navigation bridge
is the Radar. Radar is the abbreviation of “Radio Direction And Range” and is
the device for detecting objects by sending out pulses of radio waves: if these
strike anything they are reflected back and the time taken for these echoes to
return is measured. The idea of radio detection is almost as old as radio but
the breakthrough for ship borne radar occurred in 1940 with the British
Invention of the magnetron to produce very short wavelengths. By these time
warships were using radar for shadowing an enemy and providing ranges for
gunnery.
We both had a reasonable night’s sleep and are feeling
better this morning although we are not near our top. So we have decided to spend
most of today in the cabin. We did go to breakfast and lunch up in the Buffet
and we went to the church service in the morning. We will not be going to
dinner in the dining room tonight. We heard that only 5 out of 10 turned up
last night. Since leaving Yokohama there has been a sea mist so much so that we
cannot see more than 10metres from the ship. The bridge are sounding the fog
horn almost continually, thank goodness for that Radar mentioned above.
